Birtice Elizabeth (Karr) Sewell

June 5, 1934 — May 5, 2020

Birtice Elizabeth Karr Sewell went to her eternal home in Heaven on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at age 85.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia on June, 5 th 1934, she was the first child of the late Benjamin Karr and Jewell Thompson Karr (Inzer). The loving older sister to Gay Nell Karr Wood of Mableton and the late Roy Lamar Karr, Sr of Villa Rica.

Bert (as she was affectionately nicknamed) married Grady Russell Sewell, Sr on April 15, 1950. They were married for 57 years before Grady’s passing in 2007.  Bert and Grady went on to have two children, Grady Russell Jr and Andrea Renee.

Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her.  She was raised in the Church of God faith and began playing the piano at the early age of six years old.  She served as a church pianist and music director to many congregations over the last 50 years. She was the on-call pianist for funeral homes in the Douglasville and surrounding area and proudly served the Douglas County Sheriff Department as the pianist for the inmate church services for over 25 years. Because of her devoted music ministry and volunteer work, she deservingly received many awards and honors throughout the years.

Besides her music, Bert loved to travel and tend to her flower garden.  Those that knew her best can attest to her sharp sense of humor and particular “German Jewish” ways which she was so fond of talking about.

Bert is now joyously reunited in Heaven with her beloved grandmother, parents, brother, husband and many other family and friends. She is survived by her sister Gay Nell Wood of Mableton, son, Grady Russell Sewell, Jr (Jackie) of Villa Rica and daughter Andrea Renee Sewell Davenport (David) of Villa Rica.  She was the proud grandmother of four grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews.
