Mrs. Peggy Joan (Potate) Dunaway, age 89, of Temple passed away on Friday, April 17, 2020. She was born in Villa Rica on Thursday, April 9, 1931. Mrs. Dunaway was the daughter of the late, Raynor Potate and the late, Hattie (Morris) Potate. Besides her parents, Mrs. Dunaway is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Cannon Dunaway; one daughter, Joann Harmon; one brother, David Potate and one sister, Sandra Whorton.
Mrs. Dunaway was a member of Temple First Baptist Church. She owned and operated Pat’s Bate Shop. In 1976, Mrs. Dunaway was elected as the first female City Council Member in the City of Temple.
Survivors include one daughter and two sons-in-law, Susan and Jimmy Tidwell of Temple and Lester Harmon of Temple; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Polly Potate of Temple; one sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Doug Keith of Hiram; six grandchildren and their spouses, Crystal and Jason Bice, Carol and Barry Shumake, Stacy and William Shiery, Eric and Spring Tidwell, Candi and Aaron Wilson and Jessica Cole; thirteen great-grandchildren, Gerald Shumake, Taylor Shumake, Rylee Bice, Alex Tidwell, Adrian Tidwell, Victoria McDonald, Alice Shiery, Abbie Wilson, Addie Wilson, Lydia Wilson, Cherish Wilson, Karyce Wilson, Benjamin Wilson and a number of other relatives.
In accordance with Mrs. Dunaway’s wishes, she will be cremated.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at 11 A.M. from Asbury Cemetery with Reverend Larry Boswell officiating and music being provided by Bonnie and Jared Sanders.
